new Subaru boxer common rail diesel engine
They are already being sold in Europe, but not yet available in the United States
I really like the idea of these on everyday cars and wagons. *********** SUBARU BOXER DIESEL: Features & Benefits Low vibrations and noise - The movements of the horizontally-opposed pistons work in unison to effectively cancel out the second harmonic vibration (vibration at double the frequency of the engine’s revolution) that causes discomfort in drivers. Thanks to this structural advantage, the SUBARU BOXER DIESEL does not need balancer shafts which are commonly used in conventional in-line and V-type engines. The compactly designed crankshaft sandwiched by the highly rigid cylinder blocks helps minimizing an uncomfortable noise and vibration up to high rpm’s. Superior engine response and good fuel economy - No need for balancer shafts leads to low rotational inertia and friction within the engine itself. The result is exceptional accelerator response and good fuel economy. Contribution to the handling performance - The bore pitch has been shortened and the left and right blocks holding the crankshaft provide a highly rigid design compared to the conventional in-line engines, which has also allowed use of an aluminium alloy cylinder block for weight savings. - In addition to the low centre of gravity provided by the structure of the Horizontally-Opposed Engine, the placement of the turbocharger unit at the lower part of the engine functions to maintain a low centre of gravity for the diesel engine, which tends to be quite heavy in weight. - These engine features contribute to excellent handling performance. http://jalopnik.com/5058493/subaru-boxer-diesel-unveiled-for-forester-impreza-and-legacy-in-paris .

10th repost.
I wouldn't buy one unless they offer a 3.0L flat 6. |

Why only a 3L flat 6?
I have been singing praises of my Soob for a long time. I'm sure they will get the diesel thing right. My 2.2 gasser makes plenty of power and I've never had it apart. Almost 260,000 miles now and it burns no oil.

I was browsing for that engine and it's amazing how small it is.

Bad news for us
This is a quote from the Forester Diesel Review on Edmunds found here:
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/d...rticleId=131970 "Sorry, It's Not Ready for You We'll give you the bad news first. Even with the switch to a closed-loop-type diesel particulate filter, which Subaru says is more effective at collecting and incinerating particulate matter than the simpler, open-end-type filter used in the diesel Legacy and Outback, the 2009 Subaru Forester 2.0D will not meet 50-state U.S. emissions standards. To be clean enough for California-emissions states, it would need an AdBlue urea tank, Kazuharu Ichikawa, general manager of product planning for Fuji Heavy Industries (unofficially, the father of the Forester) tells us. Packaging this technology into the vehicle isn't the problem, he says. Rather, it's the prohibitively high cost of purchasing an AdBlue system from another manufacturer. Until Subaru of America figures out what to do, you can live vicariously through us as we drive the 2009 Subaru Forester diesel. Or, you could emigrate to Europe. Whatever's easier. "

Why do they care about diesel car emissions so much, when hardly anyone has one?
Think about how many great engines could come over here if these stupid emissions weren't so strict ..Just thinking out loud. I'm sure this question has been aswered numerous times

If it was air cooled I'd get one for each of my cars. I'm always having a hard time to choose which car to take for a spin, the air cooled boxer or one of the diesels.

Trucks are managed differently than sedans, anyway, what's the point picking on sedans when they're not even a major problem source?

I think the short answer is that we as diesel car owners have not been effective lobbyists with the regulatory agencies, and the OEM's who are fairly effective lobbyists haven't been using their lobbying resources to get the diesel car rules changed because they don't see themselves making large profits in that market as the result of influencing (aka buying) regulators at considerable cost.

It will be sold here, just not in Kalifornia and a few other anti-diesel states.
