5 Speed for my 240DT

I picked up a Getrag 265 transmission out of a 85 BMW 528E and it just happens to have the same ratios as the 5 speed Mercedes used. I did some mock up and just finished the bellhousing today and hope to do another test fit tomorrow. Maybe even get the driveshaft welded up and driving. I take a bunch of photos and measurements so that if someone else wants to do this it will be a lot easier then all the hoops I've had to jump through.

it will be interesting to follow this. I also believe the getrag is the way to go as it was used in 80's AMGs. Please let me know if you plan to offer bellhousings. I was going to tool one but got no real demand for them. I still would like to put a 5 speed in my coupe.

I won't be offering bellhousings as there is little demand and its a lot of work to cut/align/weld.... but I'll try and get all the figures so that if you have the ability you can produce one on your own.

The 265 is seriously strong and will last forever behind a 617. The really nice thing for us 240 guys is that the ratios are just right, not big gaps and a perfect overdrive for the highway.

Keep us uptodate. This does look promising. I would wonder if a bellhousing adpater plate would work, instead of cutting and welding of the two bell housings. I have been involved in prototype bellhousings. The cost for just the castings are $10K for the molds and about $250 for each casting. Then you'd have to have it machined. At the volumes we are looking at, that would be the cost. I don't have my mill setup yet, or I'd look into splicing together the two bellhousings. If someone had the two bellhousings for me to look at, or drawings, I could look into it. If I felt there was enough work, I could get me mill running.

I have been looking at this too. The way I would do it is a simple plate between a MB 4spd bell and the 265 trans. the plate would be around 1 inch thick. then use a hydraulic bearing to do the clutch. I have it all designed on CAD but have not had time to put it all together.

What CAD program did you use? Can you send PDFs or other files? I use ProE.

pro/e wildfire2. I will take a screenshot this afternoon.

I stopped working on a 5spd swap because putting a 2.47 gear in with the MB 4 speed is basically a 4 speed OD trans. It is working beautifully for me. I can run 65MPH at 2500RPM with plenty of power and 3rd is perfect for merging. First is sluggish at zero to 5mph, then the taller gears work better because the turbo kicks in and I can stay in 1st longer.

I should go ahead and get one myself, I hope the parts are a crossover for the 267 that I have.

If it was as easy as making an adapter plate then I would have made a few up. If you happen to find a bellhousing from an old manual trans that fit the mercedes then you might be able to just make an adapter plate. You have to keep the input shaft length with respect to the face of the bell housing the same. The stock 4 speed has ~43mm of input shaft sticking out of the bell housing, the 5 speed had virtually none.

When I'm done with the fitment I'll take measurement and make a detailed account of what needs to be done to make the 265 transmission work.

also my tires are smaller diameter, you should take that into account for a gaer change on these due to the final ratio

Not to butt in here, but a good friend with a Euro 300D did a rear end swap with an 85 TD. After beating the bushes for a 5 spd for years, he also considers the taller gears perfect for the non turbo 617.

Er was that mean for me? I meant getrag 275 (not 267). Hopefully the internal gearing parts are the same. Would mean for a much cheaper rebuild.
