83 300td rough idle help!

So, when first starting my 300td in the morning (slightly chilly outside sometimes) or when starting it for the first time of the day it idles rough until it warms up...which by then runs smooth and fine. Although occasionally after the car has warmed up it will run rough and feel like it wants to die when i am at a stoplight etc...so i have to give it some throttle to keep it happy and smooth. Could the idle be too low? wouyld it be my glow plugs? lift pump? Thank you in advance to all!!!

You could have a few different things going on. Rough idle when could could be a bad glow plug. I would first check your glow plugs, make sure each one is getting 12v. And then test them to make sure they are getting hot. If you pull the plugs out and give them 12v the tips should turn bright orange, or atleast red. If they aren't then you need to replace that plug.

You might also adjust the valves. If this hasn't been done recently then they are probably due for adjustment.

You idle should be right around 750 RPM. If you are below that then bump it up a bit. There is an adjusting bolt on the IP. You'll find it between the IP and the engine block. You'll need a 14mm deep socket to loosen the lock nut and a screw driver to adjust the idle RPM.

Hard cold starts and rough hot idling points to a bad or mis adjusted rack damper bolt on the injection pump. Do some searching here on the rack damper bolt.

Rough idling could also be injectors, or bad compression in one cylinder. But start with the GPs, idle RPM and a valve adjustment. Then see what happens.
