300SDL cylinder head number

I hear a lot of talk about the cylinder heads being better or worse depending on the head number. What is this How do i locate the number on a 603 motor.

the number is casted on the head on the side where intake manifold mounts. you will see the number very close to where the valve cover attaches. I know theres pictures on here somewhere.

btw i have a #14 head which hasnt given me any trouble while it has given others trouble.

Its yy in your example. Between 14 and 22, >14 is good. Search on cracked head for many threads on the reasons why.

At I believe the second intake port on the head, there are numbers that indicate production. The #14, was the earliest in production, also the one usually prone to crack. Later versions, 15, 16, 17, were redesigned, and the last of witch in production, number 20, or 21, also proved good. I think only about 20% of the #14 head showed problems, this based on my research from several years ago. Yes, some 603's suffered cracked heads, but not all. It warrants checking if looking at an early 603, with a #14 cast head.

Agreed. I've removed the #14 heads from two >200,00mile cars and found no cracks, my current driver exhibits no signs of running with a cracked head either, neglect or abuse tends to be a common cause.
