300D will not shift....please help!

Ok so I was driving my 1983 300D turbo into work this morning. The transmission was flaring a bit on the upshifts. When I pulled into the parking lot at work it downshifted and then felt like it was applying the brakes on its own. It came to a stop and I was able to shift it into park and then back into drive, it went a few feet and did the braking thing again. So I kept doing this till I got a parking spot.

I shutdown the engine. I went back out to take a look at it and now it will not move no matter what I shift into. When I apply the throttle it feels like it slightly wants to move forward and that is even when I am in reverse. Any ideas? Hopefully my transmission didn't just die.

Fluid level is good. Still has it reddish colored. Doesn't look or smell burned.

How are you checking the fluid level?

hmmmm downshifts, and feels like forcing a forward pull even in reverse...
that sounds bad. something could have come loose and jammed the forward band, what's it feel like in Neutral? still same pulling feeling?

Is it possible your emergency brakes rusted and got stuck in there?

Checking the transmission fluid with the dipstick. Yes there is the same pulling feeling in neutral. I highly doubt its my parking brake because I rarely ever use my parking brake plus I would think if the parking brake was stuck I wouldn't have a forward feeling motion when trying to go in reverse.

... EXACTLY HOW ARE YOU CHECKING
meaning what are you putting the car in to check?
is the car running?
be careful ifyour tranny is acting this way, put the car against something solid, and check from the side of the car...
the e brake will not keep the car from running you down if it pops into gear on you...

I am a little confused on the description of whats happening. If the car were applying brakes while driving the front end would dip and the subcarrier would move down and forward. Can you perhaps give a more detailed description? Do all of the gears show same symptoms?

If you can push the car, meaning brakes aren't locked, tranny isn't locked, change your fuel filters.

Jack up each wheel, put transmission in neutral, and make sure each wheel turns freely. If they do, the problem is somewhere between the wheels upstream to the fuel tank.

When was the last time the transmission filter was changed? Drain the transmission and the torque convertor through a coffee filter to catch any solids (clutch material) or metal. If there is not more than just a little present, drop the pan and change the filter. If you find more than just a very little of either, you are probably looking at a rebuild.

Well I can put it in neutral and the car will roll, but when I put it in reverse and drive it will also roll now. When I put it in park it doesn't roll.
