My New Toys- AC stuff

A/C recovery and charger for $95 total. The best part is it has R12 in it! The freon alone is probably worth more than $95.

I don't know exactly how much I got. There is a 30lbs tank that seems pretty empty (attached to the charger). I don't know if any is left in it. Then there is the recovery tank (in the recovery system machine). I know there is a fair amount in there. I'm not sure how much because I don't know what an empty recovery tank weighs.

I know the recovery tank itself weighs more than just the 30lbs fill tanks themselves. I haven't put it on a scale yet, but I'm guessing it weighs around 20-30 lbs total?? It is hard to judge. Maybe more, it is a bit awkward to pick up and get a good feel for. I picked it up a swished it around and it felt like it was maybe a bit less than half full. I'll put it on a scale sometime in the next few days.

Anyone know how much an empty tank weighs (recovery tank that is)?

Sorry about the quality of the pics. I picked them up last night and just stuffed them in the garage this morning and took quick pics with my phone.

I've been looking for one for awhile but everyone selling them so far has wanted way too much and most of them did not come with a tank. This one came with a tank and it has some freon in it!

I'm pretty excited because I just accidentally dumped my R12 when I replace my engine by poking a hole in my condenser (parallel flow style) when I was pulling the engine out. So I'm going to get a new condenser and fill 'er up! No rush though. Don't think I'll need the AC in -20F weather!

Nice to have a tank of refrigerant, if you know what's in it. If you don't, it can be a PITA to deal with.

I've looked at a lot of those systems also, some go pretty high.

It is definitely recovered R12. I bought it from a truck/bus service place. They had a R134a machine as well and didn't have a need for the R12 equipment so they sold it off. So any R134a refrigerant would have gone in the other machine's tank.

I've seen a few in this price range, but that was just for the recovery system with no tank (empty or partially filled ) and no recharge machine. Most of the one's I've seen around here are 2-500. The people asking 500 must be trying to sell them to businesses because no do-it-yourselfer is gonna spend that much on an AC system. For me the freon covers the cost of the machines and plus when I use it once the cost of the machines will be payed for as well (as long as I have space, which I do, I think this will pay for itself many times over). I called around awhile back to fill my system and some want $200 PLUS the cost of freon.

I just did some research and found this 50lbs recovery tank at Grainger-
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/3GD23
It says it weighs 5.9lbs empty. But then it also says the shipping weight is 28 lbs. How can the packaging weigh 22 lbs?? Perhaps the 5.9 is without fittings...hmmm, anyone know?

The recovery tank I have is a 50lbs tank. It weighs a lot more than 6lbs. I want to put it on the scale and see how much I have!

I weighed the tanks on the scale this morning.

The 30lb tank of new freon attached to the charger weighed 7.5 lbs. I swirled it and there was indeed some freon left in there. In the brief research I did I found that they weigh about 5 lbs emtpy. So it appears I have ~2.5 lbs of R12 in that tank.

The 50lbs recovery tank weighed 43 lbs on the scale. I was flabergasted. I am having trouble believing that the dry weight of this tank is 5.9 lbs as shown in the Grainger link above since the tank is so much larger than the 30lbs new freon tank. I would guess it is closer to 15 perhaps more. But any way you slice it I have well over 20lbs of R12, maybe even closer to or over 30! That freon alone would cost WAY more than the $95 I payed. I think I'm set for a long time on my AC needs!
