of oil filters and such

I had to "school" the parts man this a.m. in Grand Rapids, he tried to sell me th wrong oil filter for my '76 300D. He told me he had oil filters for "every" model of Mercedes, and then handed me a filter for my '84 300TD-T I don't remember his part # but it was the same as the Mann PF 1055/1X you know the "tall guy" Well I tried to tell him it was the wrong filter and he told me I was mistaken, that it was the proper filter for the year and application. I argued back that it would take tremendous pressures to push that filter down into my housing , which was only about half that tall and smaller in diameter. He finally went and searched the micro-fische and came back with a printout of the diagram and said "this is what your system looks like" I said yes, it is. I'm aware of what it looks like, I WORK ON CARS EVERY DAY!!! Now that YOU know, do you have a filter? NO, "I will have to order it, you can pick it up tomorrow sometime after noon" I thanked him and said make it 2 filters and you can send them to my house, as I'm not going to drive all the way back up here for a couple of filters that should be "in stock" at a dealer. After all, he said he had "every known MB oil filter in stock" , right? Where do they get these guys? Anyways, is there anywhere I can get these filters maybe by the case at a discount? I really go through the filters and oil and would like to "stock up" if at all possible. BTW Jim if you are out here, I wouldn't park my car where you did on Wed. I had an old Impala parked there when I bowled the midnight league and a car slid into the parking lot and really messed it up! I would hate to see that 240 in that kind of way! :~) Tom

fryerpowered,

If it were me I'd find a different parts source. Last month this parts guy was probably an airport security checker. I have experienced similar frustration several times over the years.

Good luck and God bless America,

I have no association with this site but if you push the button marked fastlane at the top of this page it will take you to their on line ordering. They have good prices on oem filters and we should try to support them when we can.

Also, I hope you'll post some info on your experiments with biodiesel I've been collecting parts to set up a processor here on the family compound.

I use fastlane once a week on average and its awesome. Push some buttons on line and it shows up at your door. Front time to time they offered free shipping incentives. Last time they did, I ordered 10 filters, etc.

I've comparison shopped maintenance items for my MBs, BMW, and Toyotas (trucks and cars) and fastlane is in consistently ranks in the top 3- in terms of competitive pricing (offering quality OEM products).

Ordering in bulk saves vs. shipping items individually (especially on small items).

This isn't the top reason why one would like to do business with partsshop however:

- - the real reason, is "OLD WORLD SERVICE", I give Phil & partshop 5 Stars on service: very quick (shipping & ordering). friendly, knowledgeable, polite, & efficient.

I'm located SF, CA and usually have parts in my hand within 2 days.

Naturally there's more good reasons to patronize partshop- not the least of which- it supports this site....but in sum, its a win-win situation.

tks-fad

which tan

Tx Bill, wise guy!!! I think it was the "other tan one". If not then it was the tan one. Or even yet , it might have been someone elses tan one??? There aren't many around here that look that nice so I was just assuming it was his. I've never seen it there before, so I'm guessing. It was parked at the Mid-Villa , which is a bowling alley/bankquet hall/lounge/restaurant type of place. It's pretty big considering the size of Middleville. If it was me , I wouldn't park that close to the driveway :~) ( at least not again!)
