300SD Power Antena Madness
Ok I am fairly mechanical, but getting the existing power antena on my 300SD disengaged from the sheet metal has me puzzled. It has what appears to be a knurled nut underneath that does not see to want to come loose. But I do not know if that is what is supposed to be loosened.
It is probably simple but haven't found any pix or instructions on the forum. Any help would be appreciated

Disengaged from the sheet metal? I don't understand what that means but maybe this will help:

Power antenna Madness
Thanks Danny.
My real question was how to get the antenna out of the car. The nut or whatever that secures it as it goes through the fender will not come loose. This I can not figure out. Your reference though gets me to the reason I am trying to get it out in the first place. Some jerk broke the mast and I was going to replace the whole thing with a non-power antenna. I looks like you can just buy the Mast. Is that true? If so what are the estimated $ Thanks for your time

Park your cursor over the Buy Parts block at the top of this page. Select FastLane from the list that appears. Masts for your car are $40-50 depending on which kind you need.

These guys are a very helpful to tell you where to get parts. But in this case you are still stuck trying to figure out how to remove the antenna.
If yours is the older version all metal Hirschmann antenna box, look very closely(outside the car) where the chrome mast base is mounted on the sheet metal. The very top ring of the chrome base has a couple of hard to see flat spots opposing each other. This is where you fit a cresent wrench. Unscrew this ring and the rest of the antenna will fall from the car. Assuming of course you have already removed the antenna box securing screws. |

Cdplayer - I do not think that is quite right. The upper nut which has hard to distinguish flat sides and will accommodate a wrench is to secure the mast. Below it is another large nut which holds the antenna to the fender. A 25/32" wrench will work but the proper size is someplace around 18-20mm and I do not have one. I have not worked with it for a while but I remember that the antenna, mast and all will come down through the hole in the fender if you remove the 25/32" nut. On my 81 300SD the inside fitting to fit the curve of the fender is rubber or plastic or maybe originally it was something like plumber's putty but it provides a snug fit when the nut is tightened.
You may want to unscrew the antenna lead before you drop the Hirschman. I will try to post a couple of pictures - one inside and one outside showing the nut. |
