1985 300D voltage regulator questions

HI all have a 1985 300D and need to know if the old style round voltage regulator will work when the alternator currently has the square kind on the back, question is can I put the round type in? thanks

there are two parts on the alternators.

there is the voltage reg. Round thing with wings. Then, there is a capicitor that evens out the pulses from charging - it is a small black cube with white writing on it identifying the imedence etc..
