84 300SD - For Sale...Need Information

I realize that by posting this, someone closer will snatch it up before I get a reply, not to mention I'm in N.C, but that's probably ok -- at least it may go to a good home.

Is there a member in the Sherwood, OR., area that would go check this car out for me?? Or at least rescue it?

http://www.thebenztrader.com/details.php?id=16679

Let me know...thanks!

Thumbs up Blown Engine But

Still a great deal as good engines are only $250.00 complete....

There's SCADS of dead ones like this out there if you hunt around , most go right to the junkyards the instant the mechanic tells the owner it needs a $4,000.00 rebuilt engine .

Hell , we don't even know the engine is shot ~ I looked at one with a badly cracked flexplate in one of those charity donation places , shiny black paint and current tags , BIG letters on windshield : BAD ENGINE ! DO NOT RUN

Of course , after looking it over I got the keys and fired it up , the engine was fine and a good used flex plate is $30.00 @ P-A-P if you take it out and $125.00 with warranty from any Mercedes garage ...

That one was $350.00 , I passed and they scrapped it .

I forget which one it was --- but there's a 300D listed on that site, that states a top speed of 140!! Scared me!

What is the top speed of these beasts....140 would be really questionable....yes?

Did you see the one CO., something like $14K - under 100,000 miles...Pictures look GREAT!

Many cars are capable of twice the legal speed limit. For a long time BMW didn't import their top performers for the simple reason that in the U.S. top speed is limited, unlike Germany. So why bother with crash testing high dollar autos for few sales?

Makes sense --- But I MUST be honest:

I've recently borrowed (borrowed -- his mom and I bought and actually own it - but I ask permission to borrow -- What's up with that??, I'm thinking about going in for some therapy)

Anyway - A few months back I borrowed my sons Cooper 'S' for a trip to Atlanta...down on Monday night, back home on Tuesday afternoon (300 miles each way) On the return leg, north of ATL where I-85 goes from '27' lanes down to 2 - I was running with a guy in an F350 PowerStroke with what looked like dual 6" exhaust pipes out the back, blowing a spine tinkling steady stream of pure Diesel power....and an older man in an Infinity Q45 sedan.....

I was holding for maybe 4 or 5 miles at 110mph, and in 3rd place with pedal and power yet to be tapped --- The 'S' felt amazing, totally stable and in control! It was then when I remembered, I still have 2 teenagers on my car insurance and it's already outrageous $$'s, and do have some "father, head of the house" responsibilies....So I came off the fuel, as did the man in the Infinity --- And the Diesel Dude in the PowerStroke kept pulling away and I never saw him again -- He had to have hit at least 125+ the way he pulled walked away from us.

With that real life experience --- And in no way meaning to disrespect my W123 or 126 -- Not sure how'd they'd feel at that speed???

As it turns out , any turbocharged Diesel W-123 will easily make 110 MPH and unless the suspension is clapped out , they do just fine , steady as a rock and 100 % control along with the brakes needed to back it up . fair amount of wind whistle tho' and yes , it takes a while to wind them up that fast .

W-126's have vastly superior aerodynamics and go 125 MPH in stock trim with 300,000 miles on them , being the S Klasse they were built to go fast with gasser V-8's , remember ? .

It's been a while since I pinned my NA 300CD but it went right up to 95 + , took a while to get there but didn't seem to mind the speed atall .

It's a good thing to pin the throttle of any old OM616/617 powered Mercedes for at least 20 minutes once or twice a year as it cleans out all the accumulated carbon and the engine will run much better and smoke less for a good 6 months after doing it .

Of course , finding the freeway that's safe enough to do this plus no traffic nor cops , isn't easy unless you live in the desert or Los Angeles , as I go to work @ 04:30 I just pin it as soon as I hit the freeway and by the time I'm there , the job is done .

I would think dropping it down to 3rd gear and winding it out for a few miles would do the trick just as well, wouldn't it? With the gear lever in "S" it will shift as high as 3rd, right?

No as the engine won't have the same load on it in third gear and running the engine against the govornor unloaded is bad for it...

I'd never do that as I love my old Mercedes' too much and want the engines to last forever .

I have not approached triple digit speeds, but I do feel the faster I go, the more stable the ride.
These cars were engineered to cruise the autobahn. Given the chance, I'd be quite happy finding the speed/handling limit of a 617.
