My latest problem on the '98E: Crappy GP relay...

I've been having this on again, off again problem with the GP relay and right now it's on again. Of course, just a couple days before I want to get the car inspected.

I tried wiggling the control wires around and I can make it work intermittantly but most of the time when it's engaged, it make s buzzing sound kind of along the lines of a low air pressure warning on a truck.

So, I'm going to try and save myself the $100+ and open this thing up and try to re-solder any bad connections. I'll post the pictures when I get into it.

If anyone else has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks!

POD openned his up and posted photos of it. Cant remember if he repaired or replaced it.

Big copper fusible links for each GP inside IIRC.

Thanks PoD, that was helpful!

The relay is held together with a ring of glue like substance that can be removed with a small screwdriver. Once removed, there are four long tabs that hold the cover on. A gentle pry with the screwdriver will allow the cover to pop off.

Here's what I found tonight after I tore into it. The metal connectors are held in place inside white plastic parts which in turn, are held in place by a series of black plastic "paws". At some point in the car's history, someone had shoved the connectors in when they were not aligned properly and it popped the circuit board loose. This had the effect of the connectors not quite reaching and breaking contact now and then.

Once I snapped everything back into place, I used a small tie wrap to secure the parts.

Now all I have to do is seal the parts back together and it's done!
