1st post, wish it was for a better reason....
Hello all, I am a newbie, but I have some questions I was hoping you good fellows may be able to answer. So yesterday My wife crashed our 92 330D, she hist ice and lost it. My next door neigbor owns a body shop and he says "it's totaled" but here where in lies my issue: the car only has 160,000 original miles, We were out of the country for a few years and she was stored. NADA says $4200 bucks give or take is what it's worth. What would yo guys do if this were you....I welcome any suggestions

Sorry to hear about the accident. We need more information. A picture of the damage would be very helpful. You need to get your insurance company involved to see how they assess the damage. There is a recent thread on this topic concerning a wrecked 240d. It's probably on pages 1-3 of this forum. Look there for additional advice.

Do you have collision insurance or not? If so the insurance company will determine their opinion of its value and the cost to repair it. If not you can solicit prices from a couple of body shops and see if it is worth it to you to have it repaired out-of-pocket. Be sure to tell the body shops you have no insurance, and see if they can track down some salvaged parts.
Of course you may not want to have a car which is severely damaged repaired...but that's another debate.

You can buy it back, usually for $100, decide how you want to spend the check. My 240D was rear ended, totalled, looked a lot better after a new deck lid and a few hours with a hammer (my neighbor does body too). I expect to cut the back panel out and weld a new one in in the spring but the actual damage was not bad.
If the frame is straight, you might get away with a new fender & doors & paint. Depends a lot on how complete you want your repairs to be. |

If insured for the type of accident suffered; some Insurance Companies will pay the Cash for the Totaled car but allow you to keep the wreck minus the scrap value of the car.
Since the Engine is low mileage; the Engine and Trans could be used in another car. When you get estimates for your Insurance Company sometimes it is best to get the estimates from the best quality places with the best reputation. Most of the reason cars are considered "Totaled" is due to the cost of Labor to fix the car.
