Factory Block Heater

So after searching around and reading a bit it is my understanding that MBZDs came with a factory block heater. I think I am pretty sure i know where mine is correct me if i am wrong but it is the coolant plug that goes in on the driver's side of the block right above the injector pump. I know it goes into coolant because I have actually removed it before. The part I dont understand is it has a 12 volt connector on it how do you know whether or not the cable was installed from the factory? if it isn't couldn't you just attach a standard 120 Volt cord to it?

You're on the wrong side of the engine. It's on the exhaust side, by cylinder number 5 IIRC. Its easiest to see from below.

They did not all come with one....my car doesn't have one....but our other three do.....it was either an option....or a dealer added accessory. Either way, the power cords seem to fall apart by the engine when they are old, and the wires short together. Inspect that wiring!

You did, its not working. If the factory block heater is plugged in for more than an hour or two you be able to see the temp gauge just above the 40C mark before you start the car.

The block heater (without cord) was standard on 1986 and newer MB diesels. All you had to do was add the cord. They would do it for free during the first year of ownership.

Prior to 1986 the block heater was a factory option.

I know I can hear mine making a boiling sound if you listen closely to the passenger side of the motor about 10 seconds after i plug it in. My friend's 300 sounds the same. Thats how I know it is working.

Yes, but it is on an OM603. If you have one there is a black plastic cover over it. I can definitely hear mine running when I plug it in. My Kill-a-watt says it draws 440KW.
