My backseats in the 1983 300SD are ripped/trashed.

Did the 420 have a power rear seat? There would be a control on each of the back doors by the window switch.

backseats
No, the backseat bottom of the SEL popped out just like the 300SD backseat.

I would just give them a good visual going over and maybe check them with a tape to measure, but i bet they would fit right in.
Look at the mounting points in your car for the bottom seat and the seat back. If they are the same then they ought to fit in. Very few of the US cars had the adjustable rear seat (well, OK, maybe a lot of the 560 SEL did) but something that was somewhat common on the 420 was the rear sunscreen that would raise and lower. I am not sure if the seat you are looking at has them but if so you might need to get it to prevent a gap at the top of your seat. I once crammed a rear seat from a 1971 280 SEL into a 1975 230E. It was tight, but it went in. Since these cars you are dealing with are both 126 cars it should fit fine. Another way to check this out is to see if the yard has a 1983 300 SD in it. Then you could take the seats out of the 420 and try them in the yards' 300! Pooka |

The 1986 420SEL was the only MB in the yard-so swapping is out. (A good idea though).
This yard does not give credit or returns-so I wish to be sure before I outlay $$$ |

Yes I believe they are the same size and will fit fine. Only difference should be that the 420 has rear headrests.

we will never know
Guess I'll never know if a 420SL 1986 backseat will fit into a 1986 300SD.
Salavage Yard wanted $175 for the backseats out of the 1986 420SL !!(I still would have had to remove the seats, clean them up etc..) The U-Pull-It next to the Salvage Yard listed backseats at $13 (with warrenty)-but they had no backseats in the color I needed. For $175 the Salvage Yard can keep their %$## backseats-I will keep checking back at the U-Pull-It every week. |

Typical mercedes = $$$ issue...should just make them an offer for the seats, see if they will sell them. Seems they'd rather make something on them than crush/throw them away.

IMO the seats from an 89-91 S-class, quickly identifiable by lack of pleats, are more comfortable and stay that way longer because of improved padding.

I am in Ft Lauderdale and looking for Blue backseats for the 1983 300SD. The local U-Pull-It normally has a good rotation of MBs every few weeks. I will keep my eyes open, I am not in a big rush
I offered $50 to the Salvage Yard for the 1986 420SEL seats-no luck, or ever counteroffer. |
