Help-Starts when cold -no start after running
Please help with this issue I've had for the last month now.
It's my '83 300D - 250,000 miles, glow plugs are new & light works correctly. I've used biodiesel for the last few years. My friend needed the bio more since his commute is much longer & since I have 3 fellow carpoolers which pay me to drive - so I have been using straight dino diesel for the last month. Since switching back to diesel it is harder to start - have to give it slight throttle & idled rough. The rough idles has since been fixed after I rebuilt the injectors - idles great & runs great now - after sitting anyway. The problem is that after the car has run & shut off like going to the store & come out - it will not restart - no throttle, part throttle, full throttle - it doesn't matter, it acts as though it's flooded. Let it sit 4-5 hrs & it starts right up. Just now we went back to Starbucks to pick it up after the last incident last night. It started immediately. I let it only run only for ~20 seconds. We went in & had a coffee & then it would not re-start. So it's still there & it will start fine tomorrow morning. I work 12 hr shifts & it is fine at work since it sits so long but around town on my off days & for my wife & kids forget it. Please - any suggestions? Thanks, Mike |

Mike:
Next time it happens. Pull the brown vacuum line off the shut off valve on the back of the IP and see if it starts. If it does, the vacuum on the shut off valve is not releasing.

Excellent idea. I have had some vacuum issues in the past. Will do tomorrow after getting it home.
Thanks, Mike |

Yup, I had the same problem on a euro 300d. It was a messed up vacuum system.

Got it home after starting right up. Shut it off & pulled the brown vac line from the back of the IP. No start. Could it be something else in the IP?

I'd check the lift pump to see if it is working. Have you tried priming it with the primer pump when it is warm to see if that aids starting?
If my memory serves me correctly, you're not the first person to have this problem after switching back to diesel. I think there is a long thread here somewhere with a similar problem. I can't recall the resolution.

My sd does the same thing but only after a long drive. If i bang on the starter, it will get going again.
