300D transmission in 300SD?

I got a replacement transmission for my 81 300SD. It's marked 722.315 which I believe makes it a transmission out of an 82-85 300D/CD/TD. It is physically identical to the original transmission.

The only concern I have is that the SD is heavier than the average W123, however, I have to think the GVW of a 300TD is not much less and possibly greater than the GVW of an SD.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Sixto

I dont know what the real differences are but I do know that the engine in my car is from A 300SD and My car is a 300D, therefore Im running on a 300SD engine with A tranny from a 300D. With little problems whats or ever. Was there any real difference between the the 300SD engine from the 300D engine, it seems like the brake booster and vacuum that goes to injection pump and to tranny is different from any other 300D Ive seen. If possible can someone with a 1984 300SD or 1982 300D scan some pictures of there engines, I can't find anyone with the similar setup I have. I have a 1982 300D. Also is it true that the 300SD engines were stronger and able to rev higher.

The W123 cars have a CABLE drives speedo. The W126 chassis has electronic speedo, therefore it uses an inductive pick-up. THE transmissions shouldn't be interchanged unless many parts are swapped. On the transmissions with inductive pick-up there isn't any lubrication nozzle at the speed drive gears.

another tranny swap question

MB DOC - I am looking at picking up a '83 240D with low miles (showing 119k - it does not run) for low $$$. The interior and body are in excellent condition. I am considering spending a little $ on it and trying to get it to run or converting it to a 300D using the engine out of my '85 model. I was wondering - will the 240D tranny fit/work with a '85 300D turbo engine? If it won't will the 300D engine/tranny go into the 240D without a lot of trouble - motor/tranny mounts and supports match up, etc?
thanks

I think the motor mounts will match (not 100% certain) but the transmission mount will not. It probably wouldn't be THAT bad a job for a competent body shop to move the transmission mount, but that would mean towing the car to the shop with the engine and transmission out.

engatwork, if you do decide to do this swap, make sure you keep us updated and snap lots of pictures!

I remember reading a post that mentioned that W123 sedans have two sets of bolt holes to take to take either the 240D or 300D transmission setup. I'm not sure if it requires a different crossmember, but that's probably a $10 junkyard item.
