Glow plug light came on while driving???

I'm a diesel newbie, less than a year.

I've got a 1987 300D turbo with 247k mile. While driving home for lunch today, the glow plug light came on for about 2 seconds. This is the first time I've seen this. The performance of the engine did't change.

Should I be worried? Is there something I should investigate as a preventative measure?

Glow Plugs do nothing once the engine is started. Sounds like you may have one or more plugs out.

Can the glow plugs fail instantly? I don't have a problem starting the engine? It fires up right away, even on the cold mornings.

Well if one blew out, or the resistance on one got just high enough where it can't take anymore, etc. Could be.

247K on your car, how old are the glow plugs?

Records from the previous owner shows they were replaced at 110k mile when the cylinder head was replaced.

I plan on trying to measure the resistance of the glow plugs this weekend to see if anything stands out.

Start with #1. The glow-plug malfunction indication will come on if #1 is bad or two of the others are bad.

Good info babymog!

I'm still saving my pennies for the underbelly for the 300SDL!
