84 300D - Noise
I get a low mechanical noise in the engine when cold. It has 130,000mi. I have eliminated the belt driven accessories, timing chain etc. Any ideas?

What kind of noise? Tapping, grinding, vibration?

If its erratic, more likely fan clutch.Grab fan blade with engine off,and see if any play in clutch. If not check bottom pully bolt. They work loose.Crazy air cleaner mounts will make you think a rod is going.Last is the flex plate between flywheel and trans.

is it a humming?
Oil is much thicker when it is cold and the pump is stressed in much different ways upon cold start up. This noise will transfer throughout the entire timing chain area. Clatter, when cold, is injectors and poor ignition. |

84 300D noise
Thanks for you help. How can I determine if the source of the noise is the flex plate short of pulling the trans? The MB manual states that I will need an angle position indicator to finish off the torqueing of the flywheel bolts. I can fab a protractor for this purpose (this similar to the torqueing of the headbolts on an 88 300 (103 engine).
