240D won't start.

I have a 240D that I bought off of Cervanz (Gary) because he was moving to California who had only good things to say about this forum.

The car as is won't start, when the key is turned to the position where everything electric will turn on, it squeals very loudly. It is coming from a box above the driver's side wheel well.

When you follow through with the key to start the car, the squealing goes away but nothing turns engine wise. The battery seems fine in that everything electrical turns on that should.

Any ideas?

Is the starter motor turning the engine over? What year is the 240? If the starter motor is not engaging, you may have to get underneath with a hammer and tap on the starter with a hammer to get the bendix to free up.

I think he means "Cervan".
That would be a 1983 240d 4 speed black.

Yea, give the starter a decent whack with a hammer (not enough to dent it, but more than what I would describe as a "tap")

If it will start after that, then your starter is on it's last legs and should be replaced before it stops working for good.
