S320cdi loud bang now no power

Hi

I was driving with my dad today. He accelerated hard to pass a truck. The gearbox kicked down and the car was just starting to accelerate when there was a loud bang that sounded like a gunshot. I can't remember exactly where the bang came from but it didn't sound like the exhaust area. Now the car won't rev past 2k rpm unless you manually change down. I think this is 'limp home' mode? We're going to call the local dealer in the morning. I'm just wondering if anybody has any ideas?
It's the 2004 S320 CDi - done 78k and has the 5 speed auto transmission.

Thanks in advance
Ollie

Thanks for the quick reply. If it is the sensor, do you know what the bang would have been caused by?

Thanks again

Plugged cat?

The diesel mainly uses the CPS to provide signal to the tach; it does'nt provide timing as it does on gassers.

I've just checked plugged cat symptoms on google and it does sound similar - thanks! I'll post the results after the dealer has had a look.

It could also be as simple as the acc belt tensioner broke too.

Actually, since Cdi's use electronic injectors/such precise injection, I bet the CPS DOES play an important role in timing. The injection is all done by computer, just like on a gasser.

I'll let you know what the outcome is when we get the car back. Thanks for all the replies.

Let the shop figure it out, chances are something in the trans let loose and youre right it does sound like its in limp home. I'd assume the check engine light is on now too?

Sounds to me like an intercooler hose popped off. At one of my old jobs we had a truck that would do this periodically and it sounds the same-loud pop followed by lack of power.
