Seen worse actually with oil stains in the carpeting and cut seats

vstech 01-28-2009 02:24 PM

... my daily driver is worse than that... I'll post some pics of my ebay finds, and parts cars... ALL 4 Window regulators broken and wired together.... rust, feces in the carpet.....

don-vee 01-28-2009 03:42 PM

Really? That's the most trashed you've seen? Good lord, in my cars, you're usually up to your knees in junk and wrappers!

TylerH860 01-28-2009 03:43 PM

Post a picture of the worst diesel you've seen that's still driving would be better...

The worst I've seen would have to stem from my Tires Plus fiasco.

Anyway, the idiot who nearly destroyed my car drove this.

The only other W123 I can think of was a friend of mine's grandparents. It was T-boned on the passenger side by a large truck, bad enough to where the b pillar was bent in 5 inches or so. They continued drive it for 10 more years.

Solid 82 300D, good motor, dogs freaked out on the interior. 2 shepherds, 1 jet black. Nice dogs.

This was my 1979 300SD when I got it. The was no front clip on it and the wiring harness to the front of the car had been cut. There was no exhaust system and the car needed ether to start and would smoke horribly when it ran. There was no alternator or belts either--and the guy said I could drive it home! The entire engine compartment was covered in sludge. The windshield was cracked, the windows were stuck down, and the interior was full of water. The seats were sunken in and the springs were rusty.

But, despite all this the car is now beautiful and has been a daily driver for over a year. A valve adjustment, oil change, change of all filters, cleaning of the ALDA tubing, and repair of the wiring harness has the engine running well and with much power. I use B99 biodiesel.

It is also having the power windows, sunroof, and climate control converted to manual. Euro-spec headlights are soon to be installed. The heated seat option will be added from another 1979 300SD as well. The underside of the trunk sports a reflective triangle. This car was made with the optional rear headrests. I also now have the complete W116 factory shop manual set.

progun 01-30-2009 05:36 PM

Let's see some after pics of that Squiggle! What is this ALDA tubing of which you speak?

I looked at an '80 CD when I was shopping for a diesel W123, and it was a sad, sad sack of a car. First, I show up and the motor is warm already. Next, the guy starts it by spraying ether in to it... A LOT OF ETHER! Fire actually blows back out of the intake when it finally starts! No reverse, no first, the two-three shift was like a flare in slow motion, and I dared not get it up to high enough speeds to shift in to fourth, because I'm certain it would have split the car in to pieces - It was like the hitting anything above warp two in the old Star Trek series - Crap began to rattle off of the car!

I thought that driving down the road for half a mile was scary due to the 180 degrees of play in the steering wheel, but driving back the way I came was even more frightening, because the horrid smoke trail that the car left behind had not dissipated by the time I returned! I began to imagine that the smoke cloud would settle over some third world nation on the other side of the world and destroy their crops. LOL!

After all of that, I figured, okay, it's a CD... Even if the drivetrain is utter crap, maybe the body is worth the price the guy was asking... Nope. The floors were made from - honest to God - street signs! The entire bottom of both doors was rusted wide open as well.

The truly amazing part about the car was that it actually ran and moved, and to be honest, didn't look bad from twenty feet away. The car was well beyond being worth anything more than a few parts, and only because it was a coupe!

Now, as for nasty trashed... Well, that CD and several other rusted out W123's I looked at lowered my standards by so much that I actually liked, and purchased my '77 300D. Yeah, the 300D had mold growing everywhere inside of it, but darn it, the body is pretty solid... Actually amazingly solid for an early W123!

So, here's my, ahem, nasty contribution. My very own car back when I first bought it. Go ahead... call it a rolling parts car. It essentially was, after all.

Bent and battered, but free of serious rust.

I'll have to take picks next time I go to the junkyard. Theres some bad ones.

Oracle12345 01-30-2009 09:19 PM

The 77 I got had like 3 mouse nests and didnt smell the best but the car had a really solid body and a decent drivetrain so I picked it up for$500 and I havent had to put much money in it to make a it a good car.

I should have taken a pic of the 300CD I looked at last fall. It was VERY rusty and beaten.....it was a 1980 with a turbo motor transplant....the motor ran amazingly well, would have been a good donor car...they only wanted $1100....but I was looking for a nice car for my wife....so it was off the table. :o Hopefully it ended up in good hands....

The guy selling it said there was an interesting man in the hills near him that has like 40 W123's......all stowed away....his wife left him because of his addiction to them! So there might be 40+ very nice W123's stashed less than 15 miles from here.....the guy supposedly sells one every now and then...but will always "meet you" to make the deal, so no one can find where he keeps them all. :dizzy2:

Plus it is a right hand drive. You'll need to convert your car in order to use it. :D

240D i got for free when i bought a 300D for parts.

it had been sitting under a pine tree for 10 years. the outside was covered in some kind of mold, and sap. and the interior was completely covered in mold. it was so disgusting.
it fired right up with a fresh battery

And gosh, that is a dusty car, but it looks to be in pretty good condition under all the grime.

If ever there were a torsion bar about to snap... Wow!

d71889b 03-06-2009 10:34 AM

no really the rest of the car is solid. there are 2 other spots of rust on the roof, thats it. i replaced that quarter panel, it looks fine now . not like swiss cheese.
the underside of the car isn't rusted at all either,

and no that torsion bar has a loong ways to go before it snaps.

That rocker rust would still worry me. Have you knocked on all of the undercoating to be sure you're not just seeing a thick layer of whatever that goo is that they covered the bottom of the car in? That stuff can hide some pretty nasty rust.

there isn't any undercoating it looks like it was spray painted or something. whatever it is it worked.
the exhaust of course had to be replaced, and the carpet and floor mats as well.
its 100% solid all the way through the floors.

Interesting. Just so you know, there would have been undercoating on it originally, so someone has obviously messed with things in the past.
