And on the oil topic, my standard run is Rotella dino, interval at 5k miles gets oil, filter, and tire rotation.

I put synthetic in it just for the winter to get the reduced thickness when cold, and am going to have to run it 10,000 just to make it worth having paid the ridiculous price I paid for the stuff. Will PROBABLY change the filter at 5,000 anyway but I haven't decided for sure yet.

That may be true, but I am not going to change back from synthetic until someone makes a diesel rated 5W-40 conventional oil.

As for the lifters, the same benz mechanic as mentioned before said that syn oil wont fix lifters. BUT people on here have said it will. Can anyone speak from testimony if it will work, and unstick my lifters?

Change your oil hot and once every 10,000 miles.
I'll one up that.

If you're not using a bypass oil filter and NEVER changing your oil, you are wasting time, money, and hurting the environment.

Pictures? How much modification does it take?

i have a 1987 300TD OEM603 engine, i live in the bay area California and i run Shell Rotella T 15W-40 "dino". and i change the oil every 5000K along with the filter. for the filter, i use purolator. the only oil that stays in the filter is the stuff that absorbed into it, so its negligible, but since i change oil along with the filter, its not an issue.

my thought on the matter is, why put clean oil, synthetic or dino, through a dirty filter, to me it just doesn't make sense. and unless your car puts out a lot of soot, the filter shouldn't need to be change until the oil does.

well thats my two cents.

I haven't done it yet, but others have. There are a couple of threads on this.

Since you recommend it, I assumed you were using one. I could suggest powering our cars on dilithium crystals, but I usually test things on my own car before suggesting them to others.

My 10,000 mile recommendation is backed up by real world data.

I wouldn't want it to look like a hacked up WVO system when I opened my hood. Offense meant to installers of hacked up WVO systems.

No offense... but you couldn't pay me to run a personal engine that way. At least not on my income. I'm all for environmentalism and everything else that's nice and "progressive" within reason... but even if you're filtering solid particle waste out of the engine oil, NEVER changing the oil is still letting all the oil's additives get more and more "cooked" in the engine... I've never been in a running engine personally but it seems to me it's not exactly an "easy" environment to be in... that oil has to reach a point eventually where it's not working up to its full specifications and not lubricating as well as it could be. I can't prove it, but the peace of mind of 5000k mile oil changes is worth it to me... not to mention that engines are more expensive than oil.

If it's working for some of you... I applaud you for your world-saving abilities, your financial acumen, your incredibly increased free time... and your courage. But... I tend to think that even for the no-maintenance people, once a year or once every 5-10k is sort of a "minimum requirement".
