Splash Shield Sage
As I am rolling down I-90 through scenic (ha!) Indiana, a tread comes flying off of a semi, hits in front of me and proceeds to take out all the splash shielding under the engine. How important are these? Where can I get them? (a local guy quoted me about $1000 to replace them) I crawled under the car and it looks like they are pretty easy to replace. Anyone know?

Phil @ Fastlane link above can get them if you call him as can any dealer.
shipping isnt cheap as they are large. There are three of them: a front piece the width of the car convering and supporting the bottom of the rad, a middle more square piece covering the engine proper, and a rear one covering the entire trans. The latter is the largest. http://detali.ru click, Mercedes on the left pane, then CARS and then navigate to 210.020 model, then to #52 Chassis Sheet Metal subsection Anti-noise Capsule. Sorry can't link to it directly for some reason.

I know for a 99 E300 the front splash shield under the radiator is part number is 210 520 19 23. I was quoted $164.00 from a MB Body Shop.
I need one from when a guy lost a load of smaller boxes with toys in them he was towing. They are easy to put on, easier to remove. The one that covers the tranny is the toughest but doable witout getting the car off the ground. I take my middle one off all the time when changing oil.

I'm not sure on the 210, but on the 124 the rear/tranny shield is in jeopardy of the airflow pulling it down/off with the engine shield missing.
Many people run without them, you really won't notice much change in noise, nor mileage, nor engine cooling. It does do a lot to keep the engine compartment clean I've found.

Not on the W210, my middle (engine) panel has been off since I've owned the car.

A year ago the front-most shield cost me $139.20 (with MBCA 15% discount) plus tax at my local dealer. The middle one is probably a little less expensive and the rear one more, as it is the largest of the three.

My W124 is missing all the shields.....I don't really care because it makes it less of a pain to work on underneath.....the gasser compartment is still WAY WAY cleaner than the diesel.....so I won't notice that.
