Will a starter motor from a 617.950 with a 722 trans mate up with a 4.5 gasser with a 722?

I do not know. However, you could go to your favorite internet seller and look up the part numbers for both Starters and compare them. If they are the same there is a good chance they are interchangeable.

I checked, and the numbers don't match...that is between aftermarket manufacturers. I didn't look up genuine MB starters

I don't think they are interchangeable.....

I would guess they won't swap. The starters on diesel are generally much bigger and heavier than their gas counterparts.
