Towing 300D with dolly a NO NO?

Did a search but could not narrow it down enough for an answer out of the thousand responces to "towing" as a search keyword.

Any suggestions for another set of keywords to search by orrrr.....

Anyone know? Can you flat or dolly tow a 83 300sd?

Do you have to toe with rear wheels up on dolly if you use one?

Flat bed is best. If you are using a dolly, disconnect the drive shaft.

User ProGun tried to tow his w123 on a dolly, with the rear wheels off the ground. It ended in catastophe.

I just towed my new 77 300D project home on a dolly. The engine was out so I didn't have to disconnect the drive shaft. But I towed it with the rear on the dolly, locked the steering wheel and tied it up to it couldn't turn. I didn't have any issues. Just take it slow and easy. Seems like with the engine in you'd want to tow it with the front wheels up and the drive shaft disconnected at the differential.

If it runs you can tow it 4-down idling in neutral, ditto with the dolly.

I've retrieved at least three 123s and one 115 with a tow dolly. Do it front wheels up, pull the driveshaft if it's an automatic. I pulled the two cars with manuals in neutral and with the driveshaft in place.

All of them came home behind my 300TD too.

ok thanks. Was hoping I could save money and move two things at once (unimog on tow truck and 300D pulled behind.)Its an expensive pull from where they are stored to my new home.

I towed my 350SDL home with the rear wheels up on the dolly and front wheels down, just tied the steering off well with a tie-down strap. I really don't see what the big deal is on towing backwards other than perhaps tire wear.

Shouldn't you be pulling the 300 home with the Unimog? Wouldn't that be a site to see. Either way we'll need pics of a Unimog on a tow truck with a 300 in tow.

Ditto here, have disconnected the drive shaft and towed a 240D yesterday, as a matter of fact (riight, Roy? lol).. Have also towed two other 240D cars with D/S connected, but back wheels up on the dolly, steering locked etc etc. Towed them about 500 miles that way. You just have to watch your speed, because the back end is lighter and gets unstable above 60 mph, no matter how well you secure it.

My only advicve: don't do that stuff with 12" on the ground and 5 degree temps it's not fun.

Travel at reasonable speeds for the road conditions and use a "long wheel base tow vehicle" which weighs more than the dolly and car being pulled combined.

I'd tow it with the rear wheels up myself.

I need to find photos of the 'Mog on the trailer behind the BlueBird. That was more than a dinghy.

There was a guy on here that towed a W123 behind I think it was a Trailblazer or Equinox or something, with the front wheels on the ground, and somehow lost control, the tow vehicle flipped, and the trailer disconnected...

I wouldn't use a dolly if it were me...flatbed all the way.

I towed my 300SD home on a Rent A Dolly and has no problems. Front wheels were up and drive shaft was connected. No problems and was doing 70 home.

This is true. The key to towing one with the rear wheels on a tow dolly is using a longer and heavier vehicle to do the towing. ProGun used a minivan as the tow vehicle IIRC, and it indeed end badly - with both the minivan and his Mercedes in a ditch.

The best thing to do is disconnect the rear driveshaft and tow it with the rear wheels on the ground. BUT, if you must tow it with the fronts on the ground the key points are

1) Use a tow vehicle that is longer and heavier than the 300D - at least a 1/2 ton pickup, preferably a 3/4 ton.

2) Lock the steering wheel VERY firmly - not just with the steering column lock but with ratchet straps or similar

3) KEEP IT SLOW - don't go much above the minimum speed limit on freeways - about 45 mph MAX

Good luck with it.
