96 E300 D Bumper Problem

HI,
I have to take the bumpers off to do some body work on my car. Can not get the bumpers off. Do I need to take the little cover off the actual bumper off. Are the screws hidden behind that? I removed the undercarriage cover and only see two screws on the side, but can not locate any in the middle of the bumper. Also what is the best way to take the side panels off without breaking anything?

I just replaced the front in my 95. There are four studs, two on a side roughly in line with the headlamps/wiper, and then two additional small bolts at the wings ( which you found) and a small bolt in the upper center of the bumper. You might be referring to the license plate holder in your post, you dont need to remove that to drop the bumper.

You'll see the studs if you look in front of the tires. Pair on each side, maybe 3-4" apart.

Careful, plastic is brittle at low temps I found out.

This may help somewhat. Is for my 99 but ought to be very similar.

This may help - I don't exactly remember if there are more hidden screws but I think this pretty much covers it:

There are a lot of plastic snap clips that hold the bottom and front of the cover that have to be pulled out. They can crack and break so I would use something like a putty knife to pry them up.

Yeah, sorry, my wife's 99 is slightly different. Yet, I see the main bolts from the radiator opening.

That diagram was a Godsend btw when I replaced the actuators in the '99.
