broken cam on 240D euro 5speed...
ok, I got more info from the seller about the demise of the cam.
he says when he pulled the oil pump, there were BALL BEARINGS in the screen... How the #@$EU# did bearings get in the screen? he thinks the vacuum pump may have been failing... anyway, he changes the oil pump and drives the car... and the cam breaks...he thinks the vacuum pump may have come apart and failed... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() why would somebody spend money on a new oil pump, and pressure valve, find bearings loose in the pan, and NOT FIND THE SOURCE OF THEM??? what are the chances that the problem can be fixed and the cam replaced without incident to the motor?

Good chance the bottom end is fine. Could be piston damage but could not be too.

Depends on how fast the engine was turning when it snapped and how long it was left to coast in gear to continue damage.

I think the type damage he speaks of is from the cam chain breaking.
Any 123 with a five speed is desirable. But.....a broken chain is a broken chain and you should expect a broken cam possibly some cam towers and a lot of work to fix. I have a spare cam if you need one.

I say you swap in a turbo 617 and investigate getting your rare and desirable m pump modified to pump more power, lucky to have both the 5 speed and m pump!! turbo!

yeah, I'm debating dropping in a turbo from my 83SD... or just fixing the 240 euro with the Mpump... the chain is intact, the cam is broken into 3 pieces, and the front tower is shattered.
I figure the valves in the last cylinder must have hit as the motor coasted to a stop. when I get the towers and cam off, I'll measure the height of the valves... hopefully they were closed when the cam broke... wishfull thinking... I can get a spare motor, or pull the parts off and rebuild it, or just swap in a turbo motor... I'll decide soon as it gets warm out.

... um, guess what...
the chain is not only unbroken, but still in perfect time... the cam broke cleanly, and doesn't appear to have allowed any valves to hit. this is all just from a surface exam, but we'll see for sure, when a new cam gets in there and so on. lets see, how high should the valves sit? they all sit very close to the same height...

That's odd. Usually the cam fails because the chain breaks.
Vacuum pump fails => parts get stuck in chain rails/guides => chain fails => pistons hit valves => cam breaks What would cause the cam failure if the chain didn't break?

well the PO thinks he had an oil issue, and the cam bound and twisted... no evidence of that either... I'll be sure to let you guys know when I get in there...
