Air Mass Sensor - '99 Diesel

Sensor replaced 4/04 @54K and this week at 131K. Air filter changed more frequently than book (as I do with all), but my mechanic says that is what fouled the sensor.
How often should air filter be changed and is the old sensor salvageable for a future replacement?

CRC makes a spray cleaner for the MAF which you can buy at any auto parts store. Dirty little secret in the auto repair industry is that you can use that stuff the clean the MAF and more often than not it will work...so it is worth a try.

You might also check the airbox that the air filter is in for warpage. Mine is warped and I need to use extreme caution to get it to seal perfectly.
