Ok... Thanks. I was wondering because 1.5 turns CCW on mine bottomed out the screw.

It was already pretty peppy though. I think I may just put it back where it was.

Adjusting the ALDA won't make it smoke at idle but it will change the idle RPM a little.

Exclamation ALDA OM617 Oh jeez! Am I super screwed? Pics...

Well today I was headed for Moorpark CA for a test in my Nutrition class. It was about 1037 and my class test starts at 1130. It was in this time that I decided to tamper with the ALDA on my 1983 300SD. The screw wouldn't budge so I got impatient. I used a vice grip to turn the screw and next thing you know, it was free...a little TOO free...free to the point that the screw came COMPLETELY OFF!

So now I'm stuck with a significantly slow vehicle...I might even have to turn on my hazards on the street. I proceeded to my test with the SDL and came back 1 hour later to type this thread out. Lesson is learned...impatience is the road to destruction. I'm more screwed than that screw was on the ALDA...

I've included pictures and as of 1315, uploading a video to show you what I mean...help!

Questions:

Just how bad is this?

Should I just SHIM the ALDA? Or do I need a new injection pump (ohh lord...)?

You will want to remove the ALDA completely until you can find a replacement. SDL does not have an om617?

? Like I said you will need to remove the ALDA till you get a replacement. Have you ever adjusted your linkage? Messing with the ALDA is the last thing anyone should do.

+1

I have not been around MB as long as most of these guys. But, they know what they are talking about. There are a lot of things to do before you start screwing with the ALDA (no pun intended). And as winmutt says, checking your linkage should be on the top of that list.

Have someone sit in the car and put the pedal to the floor to see what you have at the pump and adjust accordingly.

On another note all my work paid off end the end. IE: Adjusting the throttle linkage, cleaning the tank screen, new fuel lines everywhere, new rack pin, delivery valve, 2 valve adjustments, cam timing check, cleaning the soot and EGR goo out of all the ALDA related lines with compressed air/brake kleen, pulling vacuum on the hard lines to check for leaks, disabling the EGR and ARV, checking for fuel/air leaks everywhere and replacing both fuel filters.

In the end my ALDA was already right on the money. Only 1/4 turn showed some smoke. So, I just put it back to its original position. I have plenty of power all over the place now and the pedal is actually pretty high now cruising at 70 MPH.

I still have not pulled the intake to clean it. I'm kind of dreading it after doing it in a couple of my old VW's. But, I'm sure that will help even more.

You destroyed your ALDA, it cannot be repaired.

EDIT: Sold.

i will definitely concur that if you don't know what you are doing, don't touch the ALDA. i broke mine in the same fashion, eagerly reading about more power and turning mine to try to achieve it. the threads were rusty and just plain old and they just snapped off, allowing the screw to just pop up and that was that.

i still want more power and performance, but i have a lot to learn still....

Well I have no intention of selling this car. It was straight up given to me by my dad's aunt and has been my first love of MB and Diesels since 2006. This car will stay in the family no matter what. So with that said I would leave it at "it cannot be repaired" and "it should not be sold."

I'm a NEWBIE! So if I come off doing stupid things, I'm sorry. I don't intend to bring down the ethos of this site. I tampered with my ALDA on my 603 and achieved great results. 617? Not so great... Lesson learned.

What exactly is it about the ALDA that prevents it from being EDIT: Sold?

dont stress, remove it and replace it

after installing my new nozzles I decided to adjust the alda a tad more. I backed the screw ALL the way out and I still cant get it to smoke. Just a grey plume in peoples headlights. is this normal? I did get more power, but my engine just burns all the fuel i throw in it.
