40-45 MPH vibration

So I have replaced the shocks, and the left guide rod, and tie rod.
Now I have a vibration at 40-45. does not matter if the car is accel, decel, or staying at the same speed. Does not matter on engine or trans as it will also do it coasting in neutral.

So how likely is it that this was there, and now with the front tightened it has shown up? Where do I look? it has had an alignment today. Still there....

Simple stuff first. If your spare is good start substituting one wheel at a time.
I of course have never driven your car but you state it is still present in neutral. You may want to examine your driveshaft centre bearing assembly and the two flex disks for age related problems if it is not a wheel balance or tire problem.

Good advice Barry. There is an interesting thread in the wheel and tire forum with similar symptoms being caused by after market wheels. MB wheels fit tight on and are centered by the hub. Many after market wheels apparently do not fit the hub tight and are poorly centered by the lug bolts.

Are these the original wheels? If so, follow Barry's advice and see if one is bad. I have free rotation and balance service from my tire dealer. That also quickly picks up a wheel or tire issue that could cause your symptom.

You did not mention checking the balance on the tires....
When I worked in a spring and brake shop back when the balancing equipment was bolted to the wheel with the car up on jacks.. I was the one that sat inside the vehicle with my fingernails just off the dash to detect vibration...
and what stood out about your post is the speed you mentioned... that is the speed tires were typically balanced at .... they said if it worked great at that speed it was usually just fine at all speeds...
There were some advantages to balancing tires on the car.... cumulative error in balance of the hub , tire and rim were factored out in the weights... where now just the tire and rim are factored together with the computer balancing... as fine as it is...
Of course you then needed to mark the position of the rim on the hub for future reference...

I have free balance with the tires I believe. They came off of another car of mine, but I bought them, and the store is good.
I will have that checked next day off.
I have factory wheels on it.

I am working through a similar vibration in my 81 240.
I replaced my center carrier & bearing and had my wheels balnced and took it to an MB indy for an alignment and a diagnosis of a vibration that starts being noticeable at about 40 and maxes out around 50.
He said it felt like an out of balance DS, which I had removed earlier to do the center carrier. I marked everything beforehand and think I put it back correctly but that was the only thing that was done sooo....?!
I will have to pull it and check.
He also found a bent wheel, out of round tires and worn rear wheel bearings but said they are not the rotary vibe because of its speed and frequency.
I am still shaking this car down [and it's shaking me] and will get to all the above but the DS is first.
Good luck on yours and keep us posted

I have been reading in the chassis manual on the driveshafts lately....
Do you have a copy yourself ?
Does yours have the antivibration donut at the front ? ( not the flex joints ).

It says that antivibration device is only installed on four speed manual transmission driveshafts... at the front..... but the manual is hard to read .... and I do not know if at some time they changed the design... to allow that not to be on there...
Something to check on with someone who really knows... perhaps a TSB has been issued for that ?
There are also more than one type of flexible coupler... something about tangentially or radially ' soft'.... really, I wish they had hired a native English speaker to write these FSMs...

LMG: Does your DS have one?
I see nothing on my 81.
Do you know the cutoff year?

I will look again.... but it is really hard to read the manual on this...
And the manual was printed about the same time the car was made...
So it might be better to consult with someone with a longer parts or service view than what I have in printed material.... even if I could read what they intended to say...which I can not be sure of anyway... Perhaps WHunter, Phil at Fastlane on the top of the page... or other long long time actual owners....

What is a DS ?

what is this

so this morning, I was doing about 50 and all of the sudden felt like the front tire was going to fall off.
So I brought it back and took the truck.

Jacked it up tonight, and found that this shaft on the right side is moving, and allowing the arm to move up and down. The ball joint moves up and down an inch or so.
What is this called, and what is in it, and how do I repair it?
Thanks

Do not drive it until that is fixed...
and since your life is at stake I suggest you have someone with some experience fix this item... and look at the rest of your suspension as well...
If you have to ask the name of an important part like this then help fixing it the first time is the prudent thing to do...
