Replacing Shifter in '82 300 TD Wagon. How?

I got a cool new Zebrano Wood shifter for my car. Does anyone know exactly how I would get at the hex nut that holds the shifter in place? Do I need to remove the console, or can I just sort of pop the area surrounding the shifter off of the wood and get to it that way.
