85 300D-T dash light & gauge issue help please
Hi All
I have just re-started the wifes 85 300D-T. I remember a post long ago about the dash lights being dim & you had to live with them. Problem - I wiggled the light knob just to see if moving it a bit after 3 yrs of no use would get any more candle power out of it. Well I went CCW & then came back CW & no it is out totaly. Did I goof? Should I have not touched it at all? Any fix in mind as I have no dash light and the back lit switches are also dark. Problem - The clock is no longler working. It was working 3 yrs ago when we drove the car regularly. any ideas on what to look for. Problem - Fuel gauge seems to be on the fritz. I had left the car with 3/4 tank when I parked it. I got it started & took it for a test drive. The fuel needle started bobbing like crazy. I took it to the station to top off the tank. It took about 4+ gal to fill it up. The needle did not rise above the 1/1 mark to the top. I have driven it a couple of times (short trips) & have not seen the needle move. will it eventualy get unstuck? Your responses & suggestions are appreciated. I am sure I will have more issues as I continue to drive & the gremlins pop up. Thanks

Your dimmer switch problem is a common one, the springs in the rheostat go bad after a while. The fix for this is either to completely replace the rheostat, or solder in a jumper wire in between the two solder joints in the dash. It will be on max bright all the time but as you noted, it isn't all that bright.
I'd guess that the clock is unrelated to the rheostat. If you take a look at the back of the dash, there are a number of plugs, a few of which supply power. There are several clock repair DIYs floating around that should help you. For this and the rheo, you'll have to pull the cluster out with a couple of handy coathangers. Your fuel gauge is most likely again unrelated. I have the same problem on my 126, and it is probably caused by an algae growth inside the fuel tank. Those little things love diesel fuel and will grow if you leave it for a while. The sending unit will need to be cleaned if a bottle of biobor doesn't work over the course of a few tanks of fuel.

Look, it's bad enough to have the rogue T at all, but to hyphenate it!!!!!!!!
Others will help you with your car problem. I'll work on the terminology issues which can be far more serious........ Your trunk badge holds your answers.
