I wiped it clean yesterday, hopefully it's just PS. But with the R4, it's probably not. Let's just hope it'll get me through the summer.

Leaking is not the most common complaint of R4's...
black death due to using a wrong refrigerant is...
So you may get off lucky....

I do feel like an asshat for not replacing that seal before install (compressor had been sitting around my place for a LONG time), but alas... if I make it until the fall before my oil and R12 leak out I'll be okay.

This is if it is the front seal, I still hope it's PS

I do not know which is easiest to deal with...
Do you have a power steering pump you can bolt on.. or are you planning on actually replacing the front shaft seal on whichever one is leaking ?
I would suspect that since it is not made by Mercedes that the R-4 would be the easier one to replace... not counting the hassle with the refrigerant of course...
As a last resort to make it till cooler times... if it is the power steering pump then you might try one of the liquids which will cause the seal to swell...

Well I rebuilt the PS pump years ago, I never have to add fluid so I guess that job was done properly.

I wiped the stuff off the R4 again today..... it's the housing parts where it's seeping from. I see very tiny bubbles on occasion so that's what the issue is, I was hoping not but....

Oh well, I only get a drip maybe two a day when I drive it and I can just top it off with R12 if it gets low over the summer to get me until the fall. I have the oil injector tool also.

Yay, then I get to decide on a new compressor or reman for the ports.

I'd be interested. I've got one with the same problem sitting on a shelf waiting to be resealed so I'll have a spare. How did you remove the steel shell from the comp body?

I spoke a little too soon on the P/N, as MMC did not retain my order history (over two years old). However, the package calls this a "75 Viton, size 258". They are sold in groups of two. Measure your ID, OD and thickness, and look for that dash # (258) on their website, and that will give you the part #. To remove the shell, bend the retaining tab out of the way, and VERY CAREFULLY using a block of wood and a hammer, tap on the edge of the shell. Once it is upset, it will come off easily. Use plenty of refrigerant oil when re-assembling, and a helper will come in handy.
