300SD A/C Temp
Greetings...
I am LOVING my new 300SD. It's an 81, 175K, kept in a heated/cooled garage it's entire life. Never wrecked, PERFECT leather, paint, trim, etc. Many MANY $$$ spent on maintenance by a man who cried when it left. He bought a 400E and didn't have a place for this one. My question... The 81 has the temp sensor in the dash. WAY back on the dash. The temp control never seems to vary the temp...it's either hot or cold (REAL cold...A/C completely rebuilt a couple of years ago). Is there a way to move the sensor up to the roof like the later models? I know it may seem petty, but the car is so ideal I'd like to do any updates possible. I appreciate any suggestions... Robert

Robert,
Good to hear from you. It seems that the North Corridor is now a ghost town. You're not working at Northern Telecom any more are you? Hope you're doing well in these tough tech times. To your problem. I don't think you need to move the sensor. On the SD there is a rubber tube that goes from the vent to the sensor itself. You can remove the glove box to check it. It may have disintegrated from heat and age. Good luck, |

I would agree with Larry
You can test the function of the temp sensor by lighting a match over the sensor inlet. If it blows it out or sucks smoke down the inlet, then the tube is probably OK.
However, I inspected mine anyway and found that the tube was in good shape, but it had a tendancy to slip out of it's fittings. A couple of fasteners to hold it in place and it was good to go. JCD |

Thanks for the replies! I will take the glove box out by this weekend and check that tube. I repaired it on one of the W123's and it was real easy...used pipe insulation and some packing tape. Was the perfect size, and all of $.95 plus the tape. :p
Larry, I have been away from Nortel since last July. I am working for a title company in Preston Center. Real Estate is still REAL busy with all the refinancing, and this being the last of the month...well, it's a madhouse. I'm in marketing, so at least I can breathe. It's a great part of town to work in...right here in the middle of Highland Park, so I get to see ALL kinds and years of Benz products. Some of them beautiful...some Texas Tacky. Let's do lunch sometime soon. I love to show off my new diesel! Thanks again for the words of wisdom!
