96 E300D sound system Problems

Hi,
my 96 E300D has some sound quality problems. i have heard that the bose amplifier has had some issues. Now I am wondering, in my case the sound is not very clear at times when the volume is turned up. Would you say its a speaker issue or an amp issue. If its an amp issue, where is the amp, so that i can replace it with a better amp.

I would check the speakers first, before changing the amp. The car is 13 years old, and between the heat and cold cabin temps, some speakers end up cracked or torn, which will degrade the sound quality, especially at high volume. If they all pan out ok, then you might try a different amp. Good luck

"poor sound quality" could be a ton of different things. Please elaborate on what it sounds like. Is it static, does it sound like something is "flapping" at high volume, is it distortion, is it coming from one speaker, can you isolate it to one or two speakers, etc. Could be anything from a fried amp to a loose wire, you'll have to do a bit more troubleshooting first. Also, there is a car audio and multimedia section of the forum here, you might be able to get some of those guys to help with your problem as well.
