'79 300D >> Removal of AC control valve unit?

Hello,

I would like to remove the AC control valve on my parts car, as I think it just might still be good and working. I first of all need to know if I can just take this unit out from it's hoses, plug the ends of hoses up, and call it good (still able to run and keep itself cool), or do I need to replumb each line so that there is continuous flow? In other words, if the tubes coming in and out of the unit are all blocked, is there a bypass route by which coolant can flow through the engine and still do it's job?

Also.... I went to look for a radiator drain plug in around the bottom of the radiator today but could not find one... where can I drain out the coolant most easily so that I can work at removing the above-mentioned AC valve control unit?

Thanks Sincerely,
- DieselPop -
