87 SDL Oil Level Sender

Out of the blue the other day my oil level light illuminates as I am heading down the road. Scared the crap out of me so I quickly pulled off the road and checked the dip stick. Oil level is fine, right in the middle of the upper and lower marks just like it's been since I last changed the oil.

The light now comes on occassionally but as before the level remains fine. Pressure is good as well, just below 2 bar when hot and of course pegs at 3 as soon as I come off idle.

So, I assume I have a flaky Oil Level Sender and will replace at the next oil change unless someone can offer a different opinion.

My oil level light also comes on intermittently when the level is in between the high and low mark. I normally do not worry about it as long as the oil pressure is good. I change my oil every 3K miles and so it is almost time to change oil when it happens. It is only a warning light, just like your coolant light.

That sender is like $60.... Mine likes to come on when the oil is at the middle of the stick too. I ignore it.

Mine comes on when I'm a quart low. That's just fine with me.

Think I will just live with it as is for now. Some days it comes on and on others it comes on for about 10 seconds.

The Don wrote of this problem last week as well. My SDL has the same issue, I ignore it after a quick glance at pressure. If it does come on it's usually real close to service time. Sort of my time to service light.

When the low-oil light works properly it's a nice feature. When it doesn't it's a PITA.

My '96 beeps and says "low oil" occasionally even though it has a brand-new sensor. Since the engine uses no oil, it mostly gets ignored. This may simply be another problem with the wiring of that era and the "environmentally friendly" insulation. OTOH, my '87, which does use (leak, burn) oil, illuminates its light when the oil level is down to the bottom mark on the dipstick. Then I know it's time to add or change.
