possible 240d tranny problems

i have a 1983 240d and when i go on the highway the car is really loud and my dad thinks the car isn't turning its last speed and says it has high rpm but he isn't certain since there isn't an rpm meter on the dash. so can someone tell me if thats normal or if theres a way to test it? Because i know diesels are suppose to run on low rpm.

It'll probably be revving pretty high at highway speeds as the 240's are geared kind of low. Their top speed is around 85 in best tune. I think my 300D is somewhere around 3000 RPM's at 65 and it's geared quite a bit higher than the 240's.

If it's a standard transmission and isn't getting into top gear, that problem lies entirely with the driver. If it's an automatic, you need to count the shifts to see if you are hitting fourth gear. Put it in L to make sure it starts in first, then back to D and count the shifts. It's not unheard of that these automatics fail to carry out all the necessary shifts.
MB diesels are not slow turning diesels like older truck diesels. They are high rpm diesels.

Definitely the case. My 240 would hum on the highway. The 300 Turbo is much quieter.
