Hey johninva,
Sorry this degenerated into a pi$$ing contest. Hope you're able to get it fixed without needing another compressor. Just remember that leaving R12 in a system with a known leak is also a violation (must be removed using approved recovery system), so you might want to think twice before posting your findings here if you're not in full compliance with the law as big brother may be watching.

wow lol, ive dumped enough r12 and 134a into the air. it really doesnt matter does it? who is going to know? really it doesnt matter unless somone turns you in and even then they would need evidence. anyways.. i guess its all your morals on how the freon affects the ozone... i really think it doesnt matter but whatever..

Back to the original subject matter....
You could probably just clean up the sharp edges on that gouge using a maroon scotchbrite pad, just enough to be sure the new oring won't get cut. You can use nitrogen to pressurize the system and check for leaks, and you can vent it into the atmosphere harmlessly. No ozone would be depleted and no one has to go to jail. |

If yoiu have access to Nitrogen, the best way to check for leaks is with nitrogen and a couple of ounces of R22. R22 is more easily detected with an electronic leak detector, even an old style leak detector. THEN it is legal to vent this into the atmosphere.
For this particular leak the Nitrogen/R22 method would be the very best way to check it IF you have all the necessary items to do so. |

Im lucky I have a good friend who is a hvac tech, so I have access to all his stuff, sniffer, nitrogen, good vac pump, etc. I'm going to try and at least somewhat fill the gouge with jbweld so the oring won't buldge out into it. We will see how it goes. Got to find some mineral oil first though.

Any random group has about at least 10 percent who are downright idiots. What good do you think your post did ? The EPA allows practical methods which anyone can follow with a little care and not be in jeopardy. You do not look smart bragging about how much refrigerant you have vented into the air.
