Signs of an overheated engine

Found an 87 300D that has been "abandoned" and it's for sale. Guy says someone drove it to Ky from somewhere in Alabama, pulled into his parking lot with fuel spewing in the engine compartment and said "I'll be back". Guy says he needs it out of his lot and the 300D owner says keep it, junk it, whatever, "I don't want it". Since it's been in this lot the tranny has been stolen though, which makes it undriveable. Are there any obvious signs to look for, for an overheated engine? --assuming it will start and run. Is an overheated engine worth pulling and rebuilding for a spare?
