splitting leather seat

On 126 model there is this problem. In order to fix it, I went to upholstery shops, Joann Fabrics, web and want to share what I came up with. Zero matching or quality of leather or vinyl. But I did discover a site that will custom make seats and stuff just like you want in the exact color Mercedes chose in the years from 1950 thru today. Prices aren't bad either. Go to: (www.germanautotops.com) . I am in no way affiliated with him but he can solve your problem simply. One of the few great men. He does any model year, color and vinyl material or leather.

At $824.00 for a leather cushion and backrest for a W-126, he's not offering anything better than the traditional suppliers.

In fact, Gahh has the same product for the exact same price: $824.00. What does that tell you..........if you're thinking........??

GAHH!! That's the sound I'd make after seeing a price like that. You can sometimes buy a whole W126 for that money.

Yep, it's ridiculous...........to do both driver and passenger seats is double that amount.

The drivers & passenger seats are $395 plus shipping in Matched Vinyl. Leather is always expensive. I think the site offers 30% off now. An upholstery place locally wanted $200 just to replace two panels in vinyl. Thank goodness the vinyl did not match he sample cause I am getting a full seat for ust above that. At least I found a place that repairs MB and saves you money. If I didn find him, I couldnt have repaired the car reasonably. Think positively and ask the guy for a break on prices .

Demonstrates why a full quality restoration is so costly.

I bought a yard of the correct MBtex from Millers for $50. Paid a local upholstery shop $65 to do the repair. They also have the leather, the shipping is cheap this way.

Not yet split but working on it

Our '96 is developing a couple of small splits in the lower front portion of the driver's seat (leather, of course). Are there any options beyond replacement/recovering of the seat? The splits are not complete yet, they are perhaps more accurately described as "cracks" but I'd like to fix them before they become splits.

Hi

Its not really a fix but more of a delaying action, my 1985 300td had the same cracks and a couple had developed into splits - so I took off the bottom cover and glued canvas to the underside with fabric glue from Wal-Mart. Then using a fine pick I worked some of the glue into the cracks themselves. Didn't look bad and a year later it hasn't become worse.

For what its worth.

Joseph
