When driving over 100 mph...

make sure your turn signal lights are in snug. They may just rip themselves out and scare the bejeezus out of you!

I had fun in northern Maine the other day. It was the first time I got it up to that speed, it felt great. Only did it for a few minutes when the road was empty before I lost my nerve. Got it to about 110 when there was a smash and I see something flying by on my right. I thought I hit a bird or something!

Will probably be years before I can do that again.

LOL. Parts start peeling off at high speed? My dad lost a light like that before too...the threads in the plastic nut were appearantly stripped....(it was laying inside there)....light was gone. On a W124 it is a clip system....probably wasn't snapped in all the way.

Come on fix that, what is it a VW. That W124 is good to 160mph+ with the right motor.

137mph on the level with a stock 603.960, ... not that I'd admit that for legal reasons.

How is the OM603 W124 good to 137 but the M103 W124 is only rated to 138mph....seems that the extra 25-35hp that the M103 has over the 603 would give it more than 1 extra mph of top speed....

Only thing I've ever had fly off at high speed was Christmas ornaments...

My new power antenna is a bit bent now... and it's not been through an automatic car wash

Hitting flying objects is hard on antenna masts.

Can't tell you why, just that it does. The brochure said 128 (with trap-ox), I wanted to see what mine did, ... did just fine.

The 300E M103 is supposed to be good for 140. With 3.07 gears (vs the OM603 or M104 with 2.65:1), does make the M103 spin a little more for the speed though.

Whats the torque diff? Top speed is limited by torque not HP.

Smokey Yunick would argue that point with you.

Hmmmmmm....when we were racing circle track, our engine produced very high levels of horsepower, but much less torque and at a higher rpm, still well below the peak rpm level.

In our class, before CID limitations, we were running a 325 CID Chevrolet (4.155" x 3.00") and running an 6.48:1 FDR. Our speed on the straits was approaching 120mph turning roughly 8600 rpm. One of our running mates was using a 355 Chevrolet, but wasn't running anywhere near as fast as we were, in the same class. He installed a 400 Chevrolet that made less HP but developed more TQ and changed his FDR to keep the engine in its lower rpm operating range.

The results for him were disasterous. He couldn't keep up with us coming out of the corners and his top speed was limited by his lower HP production. He was forced to change classes to be competitive.

His 400 (4.125" x 3.75") made more TQ than our 325 (4.155" x 3.00") but we made more horsepower. Our lower axle ratio (FDR) gave us more effective 'torque' than he could develop and we were not only faster out of the corners but developed a much higher top speed too.

Now I am not sure how this will equate to our MBZ's, but the principles should be the same, regardless of the car.

I have had people tell me there is no way a 617.950 in a 116.120 can do 120mph, but it has been verified on radar (117mph actual with 120mph indicated) by Coalinga Area CHP.

I guess nobody told my W116 Bumblebee it couldn't fly....Robert

The M103 has a redline of 1,200 rpm higher than the 603......I'm not going to find out what mine can do on public roads, maybe on a private runway or something.

I've taken it as high as 127....and it was climbing fast. No doubt 140 would have been reached easily. But, remembering I was essentially qualified to go to prison at that speed, I promptly slowed way down.
