Seat Springs: Coupe vs. Sedan

My 80' 300CD is in need of a new driver's side spring set, so I called the MB Classic Center, ready to fork over whatever it cost for a new one. Well, much to my surprise, they can no longer get them. (Not sure if that means they are no longer being made or not.)

The guy at MB Classic was also very helpful, and told me that the coupe springs are significantly different from the sedan springs. I'm wondering what is different about them? Does anyone know if they are interchangeable? Or if it's even possible to use sedan springs in a coupe?

The bottom cushion of the coupe is much lower at the back to give headroom in the 2" lower roofline of the coupe.

I don't think they were ever available as a nos replacement part. I wouldnt' be surprised if they were modified by hand at the factory from sedan springs to begin with.

I think your best bet now is to start checking the JY for some.

There were 3 coupes in the 3 local PNP the past month 1/2. 84CD, 78CE & 78CD. most likely gone now

Don`t know if the coupes are like the sedans, if the seat bottom spring box will fit on the drivers side.

Usually the Pass seat doesn`t get the use that the drivers does.

I replaced my drivers bottom on my 85 300D form a pass side from PNP. just look for a firm one. wasn`t hard to find and about $15.00.

Charlie

There is a 50% sale coming up at PNP Sept 4TH weekend

If someone can find a Coupe seat box in good shape, I'd be interested. I checked every yard in San Antonio and there are a grand total of "two" 123 coupes. One is a rusted out hulk and the other is trashed. I realize there are different repairs using the noodles and/or tubing if there's a broken spring.

How standardized is the bolt pattern for MBZ seats? Would similar vintage two seaters be a more/less bolt in swap?

There are new coupe seat frames available from MB

The p/n for the Coupe seat frame from the dealer is A 123 910 05 22. Searching EPC net defaults to the old p/n of 116 910 20 22 and doesn't provide the cross reference. The 123 p/n shows compatibility for 280CE and 300CD.

The dealer in San Antonio checked availability and shows 100 of the frames in Germany. Of course, you'll need to pay $414 if you want to go this route.
