It happened over night??
Okay so I park my 1982 240D that's been driving great. No issues what so ever. Get in my car the following morning, it starts up fine, I drive away and realize that its not shifting as it was. It's an automatic. Overnight the shift points have all changed and it won't shift til the engine sounds like its gonna blow up and it shifts hard too. What happened while it was parked over night??

Sounds like the vacuum pump failed, but you didn't say that the engine doesn't shut off with the key.

No the car does shut off normally. Everything else is fine.

I don't know much about automatics, but first thing that came to my mind was the kick down switch, cause it sounds like it's shifting as if you had the accelerator on the floor. anyone else?

My money's on a bad kickdown switch but it could also be a stuck bowden cable. Unplug the kickdown switch and see if the problem goes away.

It's on the floor under the throttle pedal. Maybe the carpet got bunched up over it.

some animal may have been climing under there and knocked something loose, also a rat or other rodent could have chewed a vacuum line? just thoughts as i have experienced both.

First check the fluid level. Note the color as well as the level.

I don't know whether there was a difference between '82 and '83; however, I experienced a similar problem in my '83 240D. Turned out that one of the two white vacuum switches on top of the cam cover (mine were concealed by a black plastic box) had a massive vacuum leak. I recall it only being a $30 part at the time.
Sincerely,

Sounds like a loose vacuum line to me....
Check all your lines, especially the one that goes to the transmission (black). |

As I understand the system, vacuum does not effect shift points, only shift harshness/softness.

I know it says that on paper, but on both my 240D and 300CD, if I pull the vacuum line and go for a quick drive it will make it shift high and hard. I do believe it could be the bowden cable, but it would have to be "stuck" at it's limit to create high shifts, if it broke or somehow came disconnected it would shift really low and loose. Perhaps the cable needs to be lubed and is stuck inside the sleeving. Im curious to see how this turns out. |

I don't believe his 240D has a bowden cable. My 83 240D will shift very late with a loss of vacuum. However, if the car had a major vacuum leak it wouldn't shut off.

If you have the trans that does not have a bowden cable, then the symptoms you are describing are those of no vacuum to the transmission.
DO NOT continue to drive the car in this condition. My first MB had the same problem and the PO continued to drive it until the tabs on the torque converter hub that drive the front pump sheared off. Check vacuum control line starting at the trans modulator, its probably disconnected somwhere. |
