Buying on Ebay, look at this one will you?

I have bought and sold a lot on Ebay but never anything like a car. I'm well aware of buying a pig in a poke, but my level of expertise with these cars if I buy one face to face it's still pretty much a pig in a poke.

Seller on this one claims no rust, no smoke no leaks and has listed recent work done in a mail to me. I love the color combo....Looks like it's a N/A 300D automatic. I didn't know they came NA. Will it be real slow? Whaddya think? It's at least in my own state.

It's item # 260474794523

thanks!

That's the color combo on my 240D ... it is indeed nice.

Wherever you buy a car you'll want to look at it in person. It says no rust and the photos look nice, but take a good hard look. I haven't driven an NA 300D, but I'm guessing yeah, it's not very fast. However, it'll be faster than my 240D, which I find perfectly tolerable for driving around town. Take it for a test drive and see for yourself, though. Looks like it has a little oil on the valve cover ... might just be from breather hose (or bad gasket on oil cap) but check for blow-by. Buying a car off eBay is similar to buying one elsewhere ... check everything carefully. Some sellers aren't entirely honest, and some just don't know what they're selling or may have missed something themselves.

Is the car at a dealer of some sort or does the guy have other MBs? I see a w116 and a w108 it looks like to the left in the photo and a newer MB in the background.

No way to tell without looking at it. Pictures can hide a lot of things. Who knows how it really runs? I've come across people selling cars that "run great", but by runs great they mean it just starts and runs... well, sort of runs... but all it needs is a tune up.... or the classic "they all do that".

I had a NA 1980 300TD, power was fine. Turbo gives much more power but I never had any problems accelerating or doing 80 if I needed to (although a bit loud at those speeds ) Still like the "maybe Euro 300D" with a stick you saw best.

Same car, so consider the seller would like somewhere closer to $2500. eBay username (benzz) and other items sold would make me think it's his business, so take the standard used-car dealer like precautions.

Have you looked at this one: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/1366978070.html I don't get the "$10" bit though, has to be a typo or an attention-getter step.

I agree, the "possible-Euro" 4-speed is looking better by comparison. It was also N/A, so you get the same engine and should have some money to put back into the car.

Depends on what elevation at which you plan to drive it. Turbo'd 617's are a far superior engine above ???? ft.

Might be a nice car, might not.
Looks like drivers rear door doesn't shut correctly.
Anything like that gives me a hint that maybe the owner didn't care for the car meticulously. 143K miles doesn't mean anything... I'd rather buy a well-kept car with 250K than a beater with 100K.

Any single one of these cars you buy, you could spend 2K easy bringing it back to daily driver. Keep that in mind. Get a checklist together for when you look at one of these: A/C, brakes, front suspension rubber, blowby, etc.

There's a lot to look out for, it will pay you wisely to narrow your choices and get a pre-purchase inspection done. And don't cheap out when buying one, it will bite you later when you're hating your life at 1am lying on the driveway under your car.

I think it's probably worth a look for $2500. They all need something, so plan on spending and additional $1000+ to end up with a good driver. You have to decide if you want a N/A or turbo 300D, it really depends what you want to use it for.

looks like a good one, but should look at it closely and see what works/not works

I assume the $10 is $10K. It might be decent without the silly wheels and tinted windows (pimp my benz).
