Shaving down 603 cylinder head?
Hello all, I have a 1987 300 sdl with the turbo 603 engine. I was getting a lot of pressure in my radiator so I decided to take the cylinder head off. This is the famous #14 head that cracks all the time. After checking the head there were no cracks but the head was warped and had water damage around the exhaust valve seats and piston head area. The machine shop person told me he could fix the seats by putting new ones in but the warpage was something else. He says he could shave it down and I could put in a thicker gasket. My question concerns this aspect of the fixing process. How much can a aluminum head from a turbo diesel be shaved down and are there thicker gaskets that can be used after the cutting? Can I use a regular gasket after shaving off let's say 10 or 20 thousands off the head? thanks guys, I hope these aren't dumb questions but I can't be the first person who has had this type of cylinder head problem and wondered if they could do this to their head. If the heads can't be shaved down I guess I'll be looking for a used 603 head.
