To What Extent Can Bad Fuel Affect Mileage?

I very consistently get 28-31 mpg on the 91 300D. Never seen lower, never seen higher. However, I just used up 4 gallons to go 80 miles....I had never seen the gauge so quickly get to the 3/4 mark.

Could a bad tank of fuel ALONE account for such a deterioration in mileage? There are no other symptoms.

I know I need more data to form firm conclusions....at this point I'm simply wanting to know if bad fuel alone could cause a 30% drop in fuel economy.

Thanks.

I've been driving MB diesels for six years now....maybe I've just never had a really bad tank of fuel before (until now).

Are you sure that it isn't leaking anywhere? It may be something stupid like a leaking primer pump or a loose banjo bolt... Park over a peice of cardboard and see if anything shows up tomorrow morning...

Hope you resolve this issue! No one likes throwing money away...

Cheers!

If you're getting 30% less mileage, that would imply that there's 30% less energy in the fuel, and you should be getting 30% less power which you'd certainly notice when accelerating.
Is there smoke and/or nailing?

No....no other symptoms. Acceleration is fine, everthing seems normal. Haven't noticed any fuel drippings.

Like I say, I need more data. But I'm going to be putting a lot of miles on it over the next week or so, so I wanted to figure things out ASAP.

Any possibility it is the gauge or fuel level sender? Or did you add four gallons?

Hmm...I know there is a pretty decent hit when the stations switch to winterized diesel, but, I'm not sure how much (or if it's too early for that).

I don't trust my gauge enough for any sort of accurate measurement - I've never had half or quarter of a tank be very close when filling up. I've been surprised a couple of times.

No leaking return lines? (had to ask )
