Transmission capacity
I need to change the fluid in my 85 SD. Does anyone know the capacity? Is it worth putting synthetic in at 240,000? Are there any while I'm in theres to do?

Start with 5 qts. and keep a close eye on the level, add small amounts from there.

That's 5 quarts if you also drained the torque converter. There's a drain screw on that, too. It needs a replacement copper (I think) washer/seal.
Be careful with guidance you see elsewhere on line. One site says to use a Torx tool to remove the drain plug but I'm pretty sure it's a plain hex. |

I've done mine 2 times over the past few months. Once for the fluid/filter change and once for the K1 kit/fluid change.
Both times I drained the converter too. The drain plugs are an H5. The trans. took right between 6 to 6.5 qts. both times. Follow the advice above. Start at around 5 and add from there and you will be fine.

Thanks. I also found that capacities are listed in the maintenance manual which is included in the CD.
