when i put the wagon on the lift to start the front crankseal job i noticed that the rt inner boot was split. all the boots show the signs of old age and i think the extra suspension travel of the car going up and the wheel going down put extra pressure on the upper part of the boot and did the damage. so,i got the dorman boot kit. they offer an air tool and a manual installation tool but i didn't want to buy them. used a long tapered funnel trimmed to fit the can on the shaft. lubed the funnel and the inside out boot with pledge furn polish. the axle shaft was in the vice. grabbed both sides of the large end of the boot where it was going to be trimmed for the final fit and my son and i pulled till our guts came out. the large end cleared the funnel but the "really stretched out" small end still had about 2" to go. while steve kept pulling, i pushed down on the small end with a rag covered screwdriver and on it went. wow. the boot fits nice. the clamps from the kit seemed cheap so i used others. next time i'd like to try with a different lube. any suggestions? one more bit about the crankseal job. used a suggestion from the list to heat the balancer in a 250 degree oven to help it go on the crank. it helped get it on enough ,and with a little tapping and then pushing with the crank bolt and washers it lined up perfect on the first try. straight on and the dowl pins went in real nice. thanks for the tip.
