1995 E300D Clunking

2nd question of the day...

Under light acceleration or at deceleration (other times as well), when driving and the tranny shifts, the car exhibits a solid clunk, which appears to be at the rear axle from everything I can tell. I definitely notice when the car shifts up gears and can notice it on occasion when I'm coming to a stop and the tranny down shifts.

Thoughts please?

Thanks!

Andy

Is it a hard shift? Or just an audible clunk?

Hard shift could be a loss of vacuum at the modulator, but I don't know if that is what you are describing.

it's the same but even easier, no transmission in the way.

At the time I only did the front one on mine, rear one was fine, the general consensus being that the front ones go two or three times as often as the rear ones.

^^ They are talking about the differential mounts not driveshaft flex disc. I'm sure there's a special press for that job. Find it and use it because it's a PITA to get them out without it.

In case you still want to do it, I used a hole saw and drilled the rubber section of the mounts out. Then used a hacksaw blade mounted to a handle to cut through the outer housing where it's pressed into the subframe. Air chisel and punch did the rest to get it out. I did this all under the car.

hmm, the OP said
"Under light acceleration or at deceleration (other times as well), when driving and the tranny shifts, the car exhibits a solid clunk, which appears to be at the rear axle from everything I can tell. Certainly the first thing I thought of when I read the description was the donuts, especially the underlined.

Just an opinion..

Finally...

Here is the pic. Yes, extremely delayed, so my apologies. You can see the offending bushings. I'm thinking the easiest way to get to these is by jacking up the chassis, but I could be wrong

Yeh...I am gonna venture to say you have more than one problem here. Yes, it is clear that the bushing is collapsed and should be addressed. However the clunking you are referring to seems to be pretty significant so I am thinking your flex discs are also on the way out. Mine looked okay but were not. In replacing these differential bushings, you will have to disconnect the drive shaft and remove the flex disc so you may as well replace it. Then that leaves the front flex disc, which can be addressed afterward if it is still not quite right. There are also a couple pancake differential mounts that you may as well replaced. Here is a link from when I did it:

I am not entirely sure what you meant about "Slo-Cala". Care to expound? Keep in mind, Ocala IS the horse capital of the world!

My car's going into the shop for a very similar problem (1-2 mild clunk / firm shift at mild accel, loud clunk 2-3 at light accel / feathered pedal near shift)...

I'm glad this thread popped up. My forum searches wouldn't lead to much more than "use a mityvac", flex disks or cv joints.
